Bigs In Blue

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Carolinas has partnered with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, to launch Bigs in Blue, a one-to-one mentoring program that connects police with youth in communities where they serve. Bigs in Blue partnerships are also being formed in Cabarrus County and in Matthews.

Bigs in Blue was developed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, to address the pervasive problem and often devastating consequences of poor relations between police and the communities they serve. The program is currently operating in 25 cities, with another 25+ local Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) agencies coming on board soon. National press coverage can be viewed at www.bbbs.org/bigs-in-blue.

During its first year, Charlotte’s Bigs in Blue program will create and support 30 mentoring relationships between local officers and youth living in neighborhoods where they patrol.  The officer (“Big”) and his or her mentee (“Little”) will meet twice a month, for an average of four hours monthly, and their relationship will develop out in the community, at parks, libraries, community centers, special cultural/sporting events and BBBS sponsored activities.
